In the year 2005, the United Nations General Assembly declared 4 April as the official International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. Hence this day was celebrated for the first time on 4th April, 2006. The real purpose of this day is to promote the continuous efforts by the states with the help of the United Nations and related organizations. It is meant to help establish and develop national mine-taking capabilities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war pose a serious threat to people's safety, health and life. Or it also helps in hindering the social and economic development at the national and local level.

According to the 2005 report, 84 countries were affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance. It kills or maims between 15,000 and 20,000 adults and children together annually. The United Nations works closely with countries to find and destroy these devices. It also helps in providing various mine-action services in many countries.
