Many people in India know that Indian Navy Day is celebrated on December 4, but very few people will know when National Maritime Day is celebrated in India. Yes, both World Maritime Day and National Maritime Day are celebrated on different days. While World Maritime Day is celebrated on the last Thursday of September, National Maritime Day in India is celebrated on April 5 every year.

The history of maritime shipping in India is very complete. Since ancient times, South Indians used to have shipping relations with the Arab world in East Asia and the West. But even before this, evidence of trade exchanges of Harappan culture by shipping from Mesopotamia, Egypt and Romans has also been found.

The importance of maritime trade and navy in India had increased in the time of the British who came to India by sea, at that time the battle for supremacy over the sea routes started all over the world. The Royal Indian Marine was established in  India by the British. In 1934, it was renamed the Royal Indian Navy. But its proper use took place between The Second World War. Before independence, maritime transport used to be for the personal benefit of the British.

After independence, the Royal Indian Navy was divided. In 1950, it was renamed the Indian Navy. Gradually the importance of maritime trade and shipping increased and the National Maritime Day was first celebrated on April 5, 1964. Indigenous shipping in India actually started on April 5, 1919. When Scindia Steam Navigation Company Limited landed its first boat SS Loyalty in the sea.
