National Vaccination Day is celebrated in India every year on March 16. At present, the vaccination drive was also started across the world to protect people from the Covid pandemic. Every year, 16th March is celebrated as National Vaccination Day to make people aware of the importance of vaccination. National Vaccination Day was first celebrated on March 16, 1995. On this day, the first dose of polio vaccine was provided through the mouth in the year 1995 in India.

Why is national vaccination day important?: A global pandemic like the coronavirus has once again explained to the world the importance of vaccination. In fact, vaccination can be understood as a shield to get protection from diseases. It is due to vaccination that diseases like smallpox, measles, tetanus, which took the lives of millions of people at one time, can still be controlled to a great extent even today.

Polio Vaccination Scheme: Under the polio vaccination scheme, the work of giving polio drops to children below the age of 5 years has been started. This campaign was worked on at the grassroots level rapidly. As a  result, in 2014, India set an example to the world as a polio-free country. In the last two decades, the vaccine has also become an integral tool in fighting dangerous diseases. Due to this, millions of lives have also been saved from the most deadly diseases like tetanus, polio and TB. Every year, the government conducts awareness campaigns to make people aware of its importance.

What is vaccination?: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccination is one such process. Through this, a person's immune system becomes stronger against disorders or viruses that harm the body and health. The vaccine also helps to make the healthy immune system safe from external invasion i.e. virus attacks by making antibodies after dissolving in the blood present in the body.
