Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated on 9 January each year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of the country. After celebrating the occasion on 9 January, it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest expatriate, returned to India from South Africa, led India's freedom struggle, and forever changed the lives of Indians.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Conferences are being held every year since 2003. These conferences provide a platform for the Pravasi Bharatiya community to engage with the people of their ancestral lands for government and mutually beneficial activities. These conferences are also very useful in networking among the diaspora community living in different parts of the world and enable them to share their experiences in many areas.

During the event, people of exceptional merit are honored with the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to praise their role in India's development. The event also provides a forum to discuss important issues concerning Indians settled abroad.
