Kochi man plant 40 varieties mango trees on terrace

Joseph, a man from Kochi turned his terrace into a mini-orchard with more than 40 varieties of mangoes. He has successfully grown several four-feet tall mango trees in 200-little scrap containers which are filled with mud, gravel, and fertilizers.

According to the report of Time of India, The plants do not require much water and it takes about 10 minutes to water all of them. The different varieties of mango trees were grown by contact grafting.

Talking about income generation from Mango  plant Joseph told TOI, "I earn from about Rs 600-Rs 4000 for each mango plant I sell depending on its variety.”When it comes to farming lessons, Joseph learns everything from YouTube videos.

Talking about his favourite varieties of mango ‘Petricia’, Joseph said, "Petricia variety is 35% sweeter than other varieties. While you can get other mangoes and their plants in the market, you can get Petricia only at my house.”

Joseph has also managed to grow different varieties of orchids which are partially submerged in water-filled pipes. He said, “The roots have to find its way to the water, this way the plants don't down, and they bloom well.”

Joseph uses nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertiliser for all his plants and has two groups of bees on either side of his terrace for pollination.
