Guwahati: Police have arrested all the accused in the case of rape and murder of two girls in Kokrajhar district three months ago. The accused, aged 19 to 27, have been identified as Muzammil Shaikh, Najibul Shaikh, Farooq Rehman, Hanif Shaikh, Jahannoor Islam, Mohammad Atab Ali and Sankarde Burman. Kokrajhar district superintendent of police (SP) Thube Prateek Kumar said that three of the seven main accused arrested have confessed to raping and killing two tribal girls. On June 11, 14 in a village under Kokrajhar police station area. And two 16-year-old teenage tribal girls (both sisters) were found hanging from a tree. Police later confirmed that the girls were raped and murdered.
Special DGP Dr LR Bishnoi said, "Three accused were directly involved in the gang rape and murder of two teenage girls, while four others had tried to destroy evidence and tried to mislead the police." Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had met the families of the deceased girls. The Chief Minister had also directed the Assam Police to expedite the investigation and nab all the culprits involved in the heinous crime.
On that day the Chief Minister had also made it clear that the government would not tolerate any kind of torture or atrocities on the poor and downtrodden. Special DGP LR Bishnoi took to Twitter on Tuesday to share information about the success of the police in arresting all the accused. He said that under the constant guidance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the police has been successful in nabbing all the accused in the murder case. He said that the police has filed an 858-page charge sheet in connection with the case. The Chief Minister congratulated the police for fast catching the criminals.
