Kolkata: West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee cabinet ministers Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee will remain under house arrest. Ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Madan Mitra and former mayor Sovan Chatterjee will also remain in house arrest. A bench of the Calcutta High Court passed the order on Friday. The four leaders were arrested by the CBI in the Narada sting case in the past.

According to media reports, the order comes after a bench of the Calcutta High Court on the bail plea differed between two judges. With this, the matter has been referred to a larger bench. Acting Chief Justice of the High Court Rajesh Bindal reportedly believed that the four leaders should be kept in house arrest. Justice Arijit Banerjee was in favour of granting interim bail. Justice said, "One judge of the bench felt that bail should be granted but the other judge did not agree. So, a big bench will now take a decision on bail. Meanwhile, leaders are allowed to be kept under house arrest in view of the epidemic situation."

The High Court has allowed two of the arrested leaders to access files during detention and meet officials through video conferencing as they are ministers in the state government and one MLA. The bench also rejected CBI's request to stay the existing order. The bench said, "Let them continue whatever work they are doing for the public.”
