Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee. Mamata was fined because Mamata had sought the removal of Justice Kaushik Chanda from hearing a petition related to the election. Mamata had accused Judge Chanda of belonging to the BJP. She said, "A picture of Justice Chanda has surfaced in which he is seen with BJP leaders. In that case, they should be removed from this case.''

The court on Wednesday said Mamata has tried to tarnish the image of the judiciary. However, Justice Chanda himself has decided to withdraw from the case. But, at the same time, he has said, "It is incomprehensible that there is a conflict of interest in this matter. Those who create difficulties should not get an opportunity to continue the dispute. If the unwanted problem with the case continues, it will be contrary to the interests of justice.''

In fact, the results of assembly elections held in 4 states and one Union Territory of the country were released on May 2. In Bengal, BJP's Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee by 1956 votes in the Nandigram seat. It was on the day of the result that Mamata demanded recounting of votes, which was rejected by the Election Commission. Mamata had then approached the Calcutta High Court against the election results. In the petition, she accused the Suvendu Adhikari of bribery, corruption, and seeking votes on the basis of religion in the elections and demanded cancellation of elections.
