New Delhi: BJP MP Om Birla, who was elected from Rajasthan will be the new Speaker of the Lok Sabha. According to sources, PM Modi and BJP President Amit Shah had named him on Monday. Om Birla, a three-time MLA from Kota-Bundi seat, has been elected as an MP for the third time. It is worth mentioning here that the Lok Sabha speaker is to be elected after MPs are sworn in on Tuesday.

The first session of the 17th Lok Sabha began on Monday amidst an atmosphere of excitement and members of the ruling party also raised slogans like 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Jay Shriram' amongst the ruling party. On the first day, more than 200 newly elected members from 21 states, including Prime Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Ministers and Congress National President Rahul Gandhi, took oath of office.

Before the meeting began, PM Modi tried to persuade the opposition that there was no need for him to be upset about his numbers and that each of his words is "valuable" for the government. Talking to the press in the Parliament complex, MR Modi urged all MPs to be fair in the House and focus on matters related to the larger interest of the country.
