Krishna Poonia  is an Indian athlete who competes in the women's discuss throw event. Krishna Poonia   is an international gold-medalist discus thrower. In 2010 at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, she took the gold medal by throwing 61.5 metres becoming the first woman to win gold in any women’s track and field events at a Common Wealth games.

The Olympic medalist was born on May 5, 1977, in Agroha, Haryana, and currently resides in Jaipur. Poonia works for the Indian Railways, as does her spouse, former athlete Virender Singh Poonia. She began her sporting career in 2006 at the Doha Asian Games under the mentorship of her husband while studying sociology at the Kanodia Girls College in Jaipur.

What accomplishments has she made?: At the Asian Games in Doha in 2006, Poonia won a bronze medal to kick off her athletic career. She made history when she won a medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, becoming the first woman from her country to do so. She was the sixth Indian to ever make it to the final round of the Olympic track and field events, despite performing poorly at the 2012 London Games. With a throw of 64.76 metres, she also owns the record for the longest discus throw in the country.

Honours and Awards: In 2010, after clinching gold at the Common Wealth  games, Krishna was conferred the Arjuna Award, given to athletes for excellence in a national sport. In 2011 year she was awarded the Padma Shri.
