New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana on Wednesday distanced himself from hearing a petition filed by Andhra Pradesh alleging that Telangana had deprived them of their legitimate share of drinking water and irrigation water from the Krishna river. The court looked into the arguments of the counsel appearing for Andhra Pradesh that the state wanted a verdict on the matter by a Supreme Court bench instead of opting for mediation. Justice Suryakant was also included on the bench.

On this, CJI ordered that 'then list the matter before another bench.' Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, said that if the CJI-led bench hears the Andhra Pradesh petition, the Central government has no objection. Earlier, the Supreme Court had suggested "mediation" to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to resolve their disputes saying they did not want to interfere "unnecessarily."

CJI, who belongs to Andhra Pradesh, said on August 2, 'I don't want to legally hear the matter. I belong to both states. If this matter is resolved by mediation, please do so. I can help with this. Otherwise, I'll send it to the other bench.'
