DHARAMSALA: Kuldeep Singh Pathania, a five-term legislator, was unanimously appointed by the Himachal Pradesh Assembly on Thursday to serve as the 16th Speaker of the House.

In Dharamsala, where the Assembly's winter session was taking place, 65-year-old Pathania filed his nomination papers for the position the day earlier. He was the only applicant.

Pathania, who was first elected to the assembly in 1985 at the age of 28, promised the members that they would have enough time to bring up state-related concerns after being elected.

n keeping with earlier precedents, he said that new customs will be developed to uphold the high standard of decorum in the House.

Pathania noted that this House has the most first-time MLAs ever with 23, remembering the contributions of senior parliamentarians Durga Chand, Sukh Ram, Sant Ram, and Virbhadra Singh, all of whom are now deceased.

The first-time MLAs will receive a unique orientation and training to help them understand how the Assembly's legislative process operates. Jai Ram Thakur, the leader of the opposition and a member of the BJP, had earlier congratulated Pathania on her election to the job. He thought that his extensive background as a legislator would assist the Opposition in properly addressing issues that affected the general population.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said Pathania was the youngest legislator when he got elected for the first time in 1985 and his legal background will be an asset to this House. He rose from the ranks in politics without any political legacy."
