NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Labour and Employment has recently taken a significant step by urging state governments to expand the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) to include various unorganised workers. This move follows the union cabinet’s recent decision to extend the PMAY program for an additional five years, aiming to build two crore more houses.

The PMAY, initially launched to improve housing conditions for economically weaker sections and low-income families, will now see an expanded scope under the new directive. The ministry’s request targets a diverse group of unorganised workers, including migrant workers, building construction workers, beedi workers, film industry workers, non-coal mine workers, contract laborers, and other informal sector employees.

The extension of PMAY, which now runs from FY 2024-25 to 2028-29, is a significant development in India's housing policy. The initiative aims to address the housing needs of an additional two crore beneficiaries, reflecting the government's commitment to improving living conditions for the most vulnerable sections of society.

To streamline the process and ensure effective implementation, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has also introduced a new Management Information System (MIS) portal. This portal is designed to enhance data management and facilitate better tracking of the program’s progress. It will aid in monitoring the inclusion and support provided to these unorganised workers, ensuring that the benefits of PMAY reach those who need them most.

By integrating unorganised workers into PMAY, the government seeks to bridge the gap in housing access and provide essential support to a broader segment of the workforce. This move is expected to significantly impact the lives of millions of workers, offering them improved housing opportunities and contributing to their overall well-being.
