BANGALORE: In relation to the alleged forced layoff of Amazon India, the Union Labour Ministry has called the company to appear before the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner in Bangalore on Wednesday.

The Ministry's notification, which was published on Tuesday, said that Amazon was required to appear in person or through a designated representative on the specified date and time with all pertinent records in the case.

The change follows a complaint Amazon was accused of breaking labour regulations by the employee union Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES). NITES wrote to Union Labor Minister Bhupender Yadav claiming that Amazon employees had been fired for no reason.

Pressing for inquiry, the union maintained that a Voluntary Separation Programme was sent to employees giving a deadline of November 30 to complete the process.

NITES said that as a result of this the livelihood of many are at danger. The premise of the Industries Disputes Act was that an employer could not be fired without government approval.

NITES President Harpreet Saluja  said , the union hoped for justice for the workers. He  also said that the government would abandon the unethical voluntary separation policy proposed by Amazon. This action by the authorities has given the workers a sense of relief.

According to sources, Amazon is planning to terminate up to 10,000 employees as of now now and keep doing so until 2023.
