New Delhi: The apex court on Monday heard the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. Meanwhile, Chief Justice (CJI) NV Ramana asked some important questions related to witnesses and police custody. We have filed an affidavit, said Harish Salve, a lawyer appearing for the government in the court. It records the statements of 30 out of 68 witnesses under Section 164 of the CRPC. This includes 23 eyewitnesses. Salve said further investigations are being carried out through videos on digital media. It is being ascertained who else was involved in the incident. Evidence in this regard is also being collected.

On this, the apex court said that if all the regional people have been involved in the case, there should be no difficulty in identifying them. It was then that Salve said that people inside the car were also being identified other than those who were outside. CJI said to explore every aspect and possibility. When you have 23 eyewitnesses, take the step forward. I would like to file evidence related to this case in seal cover, Salve said.

CJI NV Ramana said no further questions should arise in the matter. This is a very serious matter. He said that more than 100 farmers were present on the spot, in which case only 23 eyewitnesses came to light. CJI questioned whether there was any witness who had been injured. To this Salve replied that I have to know in this regard. Then CJI said to witnesses that safety is necessary, for what we issue orders. On this Salve said witnesses are being protected. The district judge had already ordered protection for witnesses.
