SIKKIM: Lakshman Prasad Acharya today, February 16, took oath as the new Governor of Sikkim during a ceremony at Raj Bhawan at Gangtok.
Sikkim High Court's Chief Justice Biswanath Somadder administered Lakshman Prasad Acharya the oath of office and secrecy in the presence of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, cabinet ministers, among other dignitaries, informs a State government Press release.
The new Governor signed the solemn affirmation/oath for the assumption of office. Following the swearing-in ceremony, the Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang introduced the Governor to the assembled dignitaries, including the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Deputy Speaker, Council of Ministers, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, judges from the High Court of Sikkim, and others.
The Sikkim Police presented a ceremonial guard of honour to the newly sworn-in Governor.
Lakshman Prasad Acharya succeeds Ganga Prasad as the seventeenth Governor of Sikkim.
According to a government release, Acharya is the former State Vice-President and Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP0 from the Varanasi Division Graduates Constituency in Varanasi district
The 68-year-old BJP leader from Uttar Pradesh now succeeds Ganga Prasad whose tenure as the governor of Sikkim ended on February 7, 2023.
