New Delhi: Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya has got the last chance in the country's Supreme Court to defend himself in a money laundering case. Mallya has been asked to appear before the court by February 24. Earlier, the apex court had directed the government to consider withholding legal action against fugitive businessmen like Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya for their repatriation.

The apex court has given the last chance to fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya and ordered him to appear before it on February 24. The order said that this is the last chance for Vijay Mallya to appear before the court for his defence. It may be recalled that a week ago, the top court had advised the government that those fugitive businessmen who are willing to pay the money, why not consider allowing them to return to India and stalling the legal proceedings against them.

A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and M M Sundaresh had said that the legal action will take several years and the agencies may or may not be successful in their attempt to bring back the absconding businessmen. In such a situation, if the fugitive businessmen agree to return the money, then the government can also consider giving them security. It can also be considered that they should not be arrested on their return to the country.
