In recent times, Kidambi Srikanth is one of the leading badminton stars that India has produced. It is fair to say that he is the poster boy for Indian badminton. The shuttler, who turns 26 years old today, is the only Indian player and the fourth overall to have achieved four Super Series title wins in a calendar year - Indonesia Open, Australian Open, Denmark Open and French Open in 2017. But it was in the year 2014 that saw Kidambi achieve his one of the most memorable title wins as he stunned his role model and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Lin Dan, to clinch the China Open BWF Super Series in the year 2014.

It is to be noted that It was Srikanth's first Super Series title win as he was able to defeat the gold medalist 21-19, 21-17 to lift the trophy. Lin Dan was being cheered by the home crowd and he was leading in the match going up 19-17 in the match but the Indian won 4 consecutive points to win the first set 21-19.

As his carer in Badminton Kidambi piled on the pressure on the Olympic gold medalist in the second set making Dan make some unforced errors due to which the Chinese gave away a 5-3 lead in the second set. The player from Andhra Pradesh capitalised on the opportunity and there was no coming back for the two-time Olympic gold medalist, allowing Kidambi to win his first Super Series title.

Kidambi won the China Open in the year 2014 and he  was ranked number 5 at the time he while Dan was number 6. Srikanth was just 21 years old at that time and to beat the Chinese shuttler at that juncture of his career can be highly praised as a great feat. It was a double achievement for the Indian contingent in the year 2014 as Saina Nehwal was also able to defeat Akane Yamaguchi to clinch the women's Super Series title.
