Leading Evangelists Attack Trump: "He Used Us"

USA: Now that Donald Trump has declared his third run for the presidency, evangelical leaders who had previously supported him are withdrawing their support.

The Washington Post was informed by Mike Evans that "Donald Trump can't save America." He is helpless to save himself.

Evans was a member of an evangelical group that met with Trump at the White House and briefly presented him with an award.

He now claims to be done with Trump.

He exploited us to win the presidency. When he said things that horrified us, we had to cover our mouths and eyes, Evans told the newspaper. "I can no longer do that."

Robert Jeffress, a longtime supporter and one of Trump's evangelical advisers during the 2016 campaign, said he's not ready to back him again.

In an interview with Newsweek, Jeffress said, "The Republican Party is headed toward a civil war that I have no desire or need to be part of." He also stated that if Trump were to win the nomination, he would "happily" have his support once more.

Given Trump's rapidly declining poll numbers among Republican voters, that is not a given. Jeffress also urged people to buy Mike Pence's book on the day of Trump's 2024 announcement, which appeared to subtweet Trump:

On Twitter, Jeffress added that he still views Trump as "our greatest president since Reagan" and "a great friend."

Trump's ego is getting in the way of the agenda, according to James Robison of Life Outreach International, another former spiritual advisor to the president.

"How does Mr. Trump expect people to stop major issues if he can't stop his little petty issues?" According to The Washington Post, Robison said.

"Sir, you act like a little elementary schoolchild and you shoot yourself in the foot every morning you get up and open your mouth!" he claimed he told Trump. You're going to be more successful the more you keep your mouth shut!"

Robison remained silent when asked if he intended to back Trump in 2024.

A previous Trump supporter from the evangelical community, Washington Times columnist Everett Piper, was even more direct, claiming that Trump cost the GOP heavily in the midterm elections and could do so again in two years.

According to Piper, the main lesson from the past week is that Donald Trump must leave office. One person said, "If he's our nominee in 2024, we're done."
