Leading online Grocery store Bigbasket faces data breach

In recent times, leading Online grocery platform BigBasket has become the latest target of a cyberattack in India.  The company with over 20 million customers has faced a potential data breach with data available on the dark web for sale, says the US-based cybersecurity intelligence firm. The intelligence report says the customer data are being sold for $40,000. The data includes full names, email IDs, password hashes (potentially hashed OTPs), pins, contact numbers, addresses, dates of birth, locations, and IP addresses of login among other information.

The Bengaluru-based startup has lodged a complaint with the city’s Cyber Crime Cell. cybersecurity experts are working with the startup to evaluate the extent of the breach and authenticity of the claim. “The privacy and confidentiality of our customers is our priority and we do not store any financial data including credit card numbers, and are confident that this financial data is secure,” said the Alibaba-backed Bigbasket company in a statement. “The only customer data that we maintain are email ids, phone numbers, order details, and addresses so these are the details that could potentially have been accessed".

The company added, "We have a robust information security framework that employs best-in-class resources and technologies to manage our information". As per the blogpost, breach occurred on October 14 and the company was informed about it on November 1. This year Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company Dr Reddy's Lab, Facebook-backed edtech start-up Unacademy became target of the cyber attacks. IBM reports says the average cost of data breach in India shows increase of 9.4% from last year. The malicious attack, system glitch and human error in the country are the top three root causes of the data breach in the country.
