BEIRUT : The United Nations Security Council's determination to extend the mandate of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for one more year reflects the determination of the international community to maintain security and stability on the Lebanese southern border, said Lebanese President Michel Aoun.
The President was quoted as saying in a statement released by Lebanon's presidency on Thursday that coordination between the Lebanese army and UNIFIL exists in a way that ensures proper implementation of UN Resolution 1701 in all its aspects, particularly the cessation of land, sea, and air hostilities committed by Israel.
Aoun also expressed his gratitude to the UNIFIL member nations for their continued support of the operation to maintain peace along the frontier.
On Wednesday, the UN Security Council passed a resolution extending the UNIFIL's mandate until August 31, 2023, for an additional year.
The 15-member council unanimously approved Resolution 2650, which states that the situation in Lebanon continues to pose a danger to global peace and security.
Half of the length of the Blue Line, the delineation of the line of retreat between Israel and Lebanon, is unmarked. When crossings take place, even unintentionally, this may cause tension. The recent placement of containers along the Blue Line, which limits UNIFIL's access to or visibility of the line, is noted in the resolution with concern.
