Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah has officially declared his candidacy for President in the December elections. In a televised speech, Dbeibah announced that he has submitted his candidacy application. He stated, "There will be no more fighting, and Libya will be sovereign and united." The world body-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum selected Dbeibah as Prime Minister of the UN-backed Government of National Unity in February (LPDF).

According to the LPDF's roadmap, general elections in Libya would be held on December 24. In September, Libya's House of Representatives ratified the presidential election law, and in October, the parliamentary election law.

Aguila Saleh, Speaker of the House of Representatives; Khalifa Haftar, who formerly led an insurgency from his eastern stronghold against the UN-backed government in Tripoli; and Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the late Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, are the others in the presidential race.
