The responsibility of maintaining sensitive borders with China and Pakistan will now be handed over to Lieutenant General YK Joshi, who has been appointed as the new commander of the Northern Military Command handling the security conditions of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

According to media reports, Lt Gen Joshi, who has a vast experience of counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir, will replace Lt Gen Ranbir Singh as Commander of the Northern Military Command, who is going to retire from service on 31 January. Lieutenant General Joshi is currently posted as the Chief of Staff of the Northern Command. On February 1, he will replace General Ranbir Singh as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of this command.

Apart from Lieutenant General Joshi, Lt. General CP Mohanty has also got a new appointment regarding border security. He has been made the commander of the Southern Command. He will replace Lieutenant General SK Saini, who is going to take over as the new Deputy Chief of the Army on Saturday. The post of Deputy Chief of Army Staff has been lying vacant since General MM Narwane became the new Chief of Army Staff. Lieutenant General Mohanty also has experience in conducting operations along the borders with Pakistan and China and has also been active in counter-insurgency operations in Assam. Lieutenant General Mohanty has also headed the Multilateral UN Brigade in Congo. Presently, he is posted in the role of General Officer Commanding of the North India Area.
