PARIS: Lionel Messi has been disciplined by Paris Saint-Germain for his travel to Saudi Arabia sans the club's permission, a source privy with the matter said..

The length of the suspicion was not specified by the source on Tuesday, but earlier in the day, French media outlets RMC and L'Equipe reported that the Argentine star will be subject to a two-week suspension with "no training, no match, and no salary." Messi, who had participated in PSG's 3-1 loss to Lorient at home in Ligue 1 the previous day, missed the team's training session the next day because he had to travel to Saudi Arabia to take part in a promotional event as a tourist ambassador.

According to L'Equipe, PSG coach Christophe Galtier had previously anticipated giving his players Monday and Tuesday off if they defeated Lorient. Otherwise, Monday would be used for practise and Tuesday would be off. Messi, however, decided to travel to Saudi Arabia without first obtaining approval from the team.

Messi will miss both the team's home game against Ajaccio and the road game against Troyes due to a two-week suspension. His contract with PSG expires at the conclusion of this season, and given that the two sides appear to have drifted apart, it's highly possible that he just has three more matches to play with the French capital team.

The 35-year-old FIFA World Cup champion moved to Paris as a free agent in 2021, and this season in Ligue 1, he tallied 15 goals and 15 assists. Messi has been jeered at the Parc des Princes on numerous occasions during the previous two seasons by home supporters, but PSG's failings in the UEFA Champions League have irked supporters.
