LONDON: Manchester City increased the pressure on Arsenal at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 victory against Leeds United at home on Saturday. Arsenal faces a challenging trip to third-place Newcastle United on Sunday.

Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne both returned to the starting lineup for City, although Pep Guardiola rested Jack Grealish, John Stones, Bernardo Silva, Rodri, and Ruben Dias in preparation for Tuesday's away Champions League semifinal first leg against Real Madrid.

The first half of the match saw City dominate, with Ilkay Gundogan scoring twice from the edge of the Leeds area after receiving two assists from Riyad Mahrez, according to a Xinhua report. Leeds had a new coach in Sam Allardyce, but the veteran could only watch.

In the second half, Haaland twice hit the woodwork. In the 84th minute, Gundogan missed a penalty that would have made it 3-0. A minute later, Rodrigo scored from one of his team's few remaining chances to give the game a tense conclusion at the Etihad Stadium.

After beating Brentford 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Mohamed Salah in the 13th minute, Liverpool is now fifth in the standings and the favourite to qualify for the Europa League next season.

With his 30th goal across all competitions this year, Salah led his team to their sixth straight league victory.
