Jharkhand: In the Hazaribag area, a tractor allegedly operated by a recovery agent who was forcibly seizing the vehicle due to unpaid debts smashed to death of a pregnant 27-year-old woman to death. On September 15, at Bariyanath, a location under the control of the Ichak Police Station, the incident happened.

The victim, Mithilesh Mehta's daughter, was three months pregnant. Mehta is a disabled individual. Four people, including the recovery agent and manager of the private finance organisation, have been charged with murder, according to the district superintendent of police Manoj Ratan Chothe. The SP informed reporters that a special investigative team led by deputy superintendent of police (HQ) Rajeev Kumar had been established to make the necessary arrests.

Mehta allegedly received a message from Mahindra Finance Company asking him to pay Rs 1.3 lakh that was supposedly due from a loan he allegedly took from the company to buy the tractor on Thursday, according to the police. In addition, the business had threatened to seize the tractor, which was parked at a neighbouring gas station on National Highway 33, if the debt was not settled.

A cousin of the victim was quoted by the news outlet ANI as saying that Mahindra Finance Company representatives also visited their home without their knowledge. Local police confirmed to ANI that the authorities failed to tell the neighbourhood police station as well. The recovery agent was already driving away when Mehta hurried over to save his tractor, according to the SP.

“As the recovery agent refused to listen to the man’s pleas and kept driving away the tractor, his pregnant daughter, who had reached the spot, ran after it and was crushed to death under its wheels,” the SP said. On Friday, a sizable group of villagers—mostly women—protested in front of the Hazaribagh Collectorate with a body and demanded the immediate arrest of the financial company's management and recovery agent. They also requested that the victim's family receive Rs 20 lakh in compensation. After the police gave them the assurance that all accused would be detained soon, the unrest subsided after two hours.

The managing director and chief executive officer of Mahindra group, Anish Shah in a statement on Friday said “We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the Hazaribagh incident … We stand with the family in this moment of grief.”

He promised that every facet of the situation would be looked into. Additionally, the business would look into the long-standing practice of engaging third-party collection agencies. “We will extend all possible support to the authorities during the investigation into this tragic incident,” the statement added.
