Abohar: Locusts flying from Pakistan have stirred the farmers of Punjab, due to which a high alert has been issued in the districts adjacent to the border. Director of the State Agriculture Department, Swatantra Kumar Ari said that in view of the locust attack in Rajasthan, the districts of Ferozepur, Fazilka, Bathinda, Mansa and Shri Muktsar Sahib along the international and interstate border of Punjab were already on high alert. On February 2, at 8 pm, he was informed of the locust party coming near Fazilka.

After taking this information to the notice of the Additional Chief Secretary of the Department, Vishwajit Khanna, and Secretary Kahan Singh Pannu, he left for Fazilka. Ari was addressing a meeting held in the District Deputy Commissioner Office later that afternoon. He said that late-night, 4 teams were formed after meeting the officials of Fazilka, Shri Muktsar Sahib and Faridkot. All four teams reached the area adjoining the borders of Rupnagar and Baraka. Under the supervision of these teams, the action was started to destroy the locusts sitting on trees of an area of about 3 kilometers along the Pakistani border. For this purpose, 4 boom sprayers, 3 fire brigade carts and spray pumps of about 15 farmers were included. In this, the required pesticide was provided free of cost by the department.

He told that this grasshopper operation was conducted from 10 am to 2:30 pm and then from 6 am to 10 pm. He gave strict instructions to the teams that the villages along the border of Pakistan should be constantly monitored.
