On the last day of Paush, after sunset i.e. on the first night of Makar Sankranti, people celebrate the festival of Lohri. This festival is celebrated just before Makar Sankranti. People of Punjab and Haryana celebrate this festival with great pomp. This festival is very special for them and before this festival, Punjab looks bright. On the day of Lohri, it is custom to offer sesame, jaggery, gajak, revdi and groundnut in the fire. This time the festival of Lohri is going to be celebrated across the country on 13 January. Today we are going to tell you the tradition of the festival of Lohri.
Lohri is traditionally associated with sowing and harvesting of the crop. New crop is worshipped in Punjab on this day as it is a tradition that has been going on for many years. On the day of this festival, Lohri is lit at the squares and on this day men perform bhangra near the fire, and women do gidda. Not only this, but on this day all the relatives dance together and celebrate Lohri with great pomp.
On this day, sesame, jaggery, gajak, revdi and groundnut also have special significance and in many places, Lohri is also called as Tilodi. This festival has its own importance and before this festival people start preparing for the celebration.
