Parliament passes a revised bill on Air India

New Delhi: Lok Sabha has passed the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AIR), the amendment bill. Introducing the Bill in the Lok Sabha, Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that Delhi and Mumbai airports, which were privatized during the first UPA government, have 34 per cent of the traffic share.

While six airports, which have been privatised under the Modi government, are for 6 per cent traffic. He then said that Indigo will start operations from December, which will connect Agra, Varanasi, Bhopal, Lucknow and Bengaluru. According to the bill, The IRA has been allowed to bid for new airports at pre-determined rates.

At present, large airports with a capacity of 1.5 lakh passengers are covered by the Ara annually. According to the newly amended bill, airports with a passenger capacity of 35 lakh will now be called major airports. Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that the government is committed to privatising Air India as its debt has become completely volatile.

Participating in the debate on the bill, BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy said on Friday that the first low-cost carrier Air Deccan began operations despite opposition from big players like Jet Airways as Union Civil Aviation Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. The bill was already passed by the Rajya Sabha. The Lok Sabha also approved it on Friday.
