New Delhi – Om Birla, a BJP leader, has been re-elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker after the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc could not agree on a candidate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi moved the motion, which passed through voice votes.

After his election, Birla condemned the Congress government's decision to impose Emergency in 1975, praising those who resisted it and protected Indian democracy. "This House strongly condemns the decision to impose Emergency in 1975. We appreciate the determination of all those who opposed the Emergency and fought to protect the democracy of India. June 25, 1975, will always be known as a black chapter in India's history," Birla stated.

PM Narendra Modi's Remarks
PM Modi congratulated Birla on his re-election, expressing confidence in his leadership. "Birla presided over a golden era in Lok Sabha's history, with many historic decisions made during his previous term," Modi said. He emphasized that under Birla's chairmanship, the Lok Sabha achieved milestones that hadn't been possible in 70 years of independence. Modi highlighted Birla's unique achievement of becoming Speaker for the second time, drawing a parallel to Balram Jakhar.

Om Birla's Vision for the Lok Sabha
Birla expressed his hope for constructive criticism and healthy debates in the House, without disruptions. "The strength of Indian democracy lies in listening to everyone and running the House with everyone's agreement. Even if there is a lone member from a party, they should get sufficient time," he said. Birla urged for the maintenance of high parliamentary standards, indicating he would make tough decisions if necessary to uphold these standards.

Opposition's Reactions
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi congratulated Birla but also took the opportunity to emphasize the opposition's role in representing the people's voice. "The government has political power, but the opposition also represents the voice of India's people. It is crucial that cooperation happens based on trust and that the opposition's voice is allowed to be heard in this House," Gandhi said.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also extended his congratulations, emphasizing the need for impartiality. "The post you are occupying has glorious traditions. We believe this will continue without any discrimination. Your control should be on both the opposition and the ruling side. The House should function on your signals and not the other way round," Yadav stated.
