New Delhi:- If the non-alcoholic version of an alcoholic beverage isn't enough for you, help may be available soon. That's according to a recent Wall Street Journal article, which details the work of GABA Labs. The London-based company is developing a synthetic alcohol called Alcarelle that it claims will deliver the pleasant side effects of the drug without the negative side effects.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid, also known as GABA, is a neurotransmitter that slows down the brain by blocking certain signals, thus producing a calming effect. When alcohol reaches the brain, it binds to GABA receptors and mimics its effects, causing people to relax and feel warm. But it also causes other neurotransmitters to produce unwanted side effects, such as difficulty thinking and moving, Dr. David Nutt, chief scientific officer of GABA Labs, told the WSJ.

Alcarelle only targets GABA receptors in the brain, allowing the release of dopamine and serotonin and nothing else, Nutt argues. It is tasteless and designed to be added to soft drinks, although it can be mixed with real alcohol.
