LOS ANGELES, Calif. Thousands of people gathered to the streets in Los Angeles as part of a countrywide movement to defend abortion rights in the wake of rumours that the Supreme Court may reverse the famous Roe v. Wade decision from 1973.

According to news reports, a large throng has been gathered outside Los Angeles City Hall since the morning of Saturday's protest. More than a dozen officials spoke, including Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles and Senator Alex Padilla of California.

"I was honoured to stand alongside Angelenos at the Bans Off Our Bodies Rally in support of women's reproductive rights. Human rights to reproduction are fundamental. This is a fight for our lives, and we must band together and do everything we can to save our future "Garcetti sent out a tweet.

"Wealthy and well-connected women will have the resources to travel to another state to have an abortion, but women of colour, poor women of colour across this country, will suffer and die as a result," said Nury Martinez, president of the Los Angeles City Council. "Women of colour have limited means and cannot afford to take a day off work to travel to another state for a treatment," she explained.
