'Loss of 20 thousand crores in Bengal due to cyclone, crop damaged in 2.21 lakh hectares': Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has said that the storm 'Yaas' has caused a loss of more than Rs 20,000 crore in the state and damaged crops in an area of about 2.21 lakh hectares. CM Mamata said the state has started about 1200 relief camps in which nearly two lakh people are living. Let us tell you that the cyclone reached Odisha on May 26.

CM Mamata told reporters at the Secretariat that "about 2.21 lakh hectares of crop and 71,560 hectares of horticulture have been destroyed due to cyclone Yaas in West Bengal. The state has suffered a total loss of over Rs 20,000 crore.' CM Mamata had submitted a report on the cyclone damage to PM Narendra Modi on May 28 and demanded a relief of Rs 20,000 crore for redevelopment of the affected areas.

She said the Public Health Engineering Department has supplied water through water bags and pipelines to the affected villages. CM Mamata said that out of 329 embankments, 305 have been repaired. On the 'Duare Tran' (relief to the door of the house) scheme, she said, "Only those affected by the cyclone should come and apply for it themselves. Camps will be set up in schools, colleges and other public institutions for the scheme".
