Alba Ahmetaj, 44, and Edlira Mara, 43, may seem like an ordinary couple in Tirana, Albania. They cherish their twin daughters, play with them on weekends, and share matching shoulder tattoos that symbolize their 14-year relationship. Yet, their recent rooftop wedding atop the mayor's office in central Tirana marked a historic moment, defying Albania's stance on same-sex unions.

Albanian law currently does not recognize same-sex civil unions, a fact that has drawn criticism from the political right and religious communities. Despite these challenges, on Sunday, May 19, friends and supporters gathered as Alba and Edlira exchanged rings and vows, sealing their commitment with a kiss.

"This ceremony is a testament to our love and a call for equality," Edlira expressed, reflecting on the significance of their union. "Society may not be ready, but our love cannot be denied."

The event was not without controversy. Social media erupted with thousands of threatening comments when news of the wedding spread. Police guarded the ceremony to ensure the couple's safety, and opposition parties even used the occasion to criticize the mayor, accusing Alba and Edlira of undermining family values.

For the couple, the journey to this wedding has been fraught with challenges. Three years ago, when their daughters were born, they wanted both partners to be registered as parents, a right denied to them under current law. Instead, the children are registered under Edlira, the biological mother.

"Our society remains deeply patriarchal and homophobic," Alba lamented before the wedding. "The backlash we've faced on social media is evidence of how little tolerance exists in our nation."

Despite the obstacles, the wedding became a moment of joy and celebration for the couple and their supporters. In preparation, the family decorated their apartment with balloons, and on the evening of the ceremony, friends helped Alba and Edlira into their elegant white wedding dresses.

While Western Europe has made strides towards marriage equality, much of Central and Eastern Europe, including Albania, has been slower to embrace change. In a country known for religious tolerance among Muslims, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians, opposition to same-sex marriage remains strong.

The wedding of Alba and Edlira symbolizes a challenge to these norms, a step towards greater inclusivity and acceptance. As the couple continue their fight for equal rights, their love story serves as an inspiration to others in similar situations.
