AHMEDABAD: Gujarat government has decided that for some time the anti-love jihad law in the state has not been implemented. This decision was taken after consultation with law experts. Experts said that anti-love jihad is not legally sustainable. Sources in the state government said that after the views of experts, the government will not introduce the bill in the budget session of the assembly, which is going to start from March 1. A law was passed to reduce cases of love jihad in BJP-ruled states like UP and Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat also decided to introduce the bill in the state in the same manner.

However, the state government has forgotten that there is already a law on religious conversion in the state, under which forcible conversion cannot be done. Before which the state government has given instructions to the concerned departments whether the new law is required to be implemented in the state or the old law is going to be amended. It has been learned that the state government's internal cases expert and Advocate General said that new laws or amendments to the old law can be legally sustainable in the state. Such legislation passed in other states has been challenged by the Supreme Court.

There is little hope that this bill can be introduced in the state between the budget session. Gujarat Deputy CM Nitin Patel said that the state government has received many representatives from many organizations and people. We are engaged in reviewing the effectiveness of the law made by UP and Madhya Pradesh, its long-term impact, and legal stakes. Nitin Patel said that the government will take continuous action for this law at the appropriate time. Under the current conversion law of Gujarat, if a person is found guilty, there is a provision of imposing a 3-year sentence or a fine of Rs 50,000.
