Paris is known across the globe as the city of love and passion, and officials here want to make sure that tourists can take their time and enjoy the sights and sounds while being secure. Little wonder then that a new rule has brought down the maximum speed limit in most areas in the French capital to 30 kmph   It is thought that lowering the speed limit will have two benefits: it will reduce the number of road accidents while also lowering noise pollution.

According to local media, the French authorities implemented a new speed restriction in most sections of the capital city, which went into force on Monday. Any violation of this or other traffic rules will attract a heavy penalty which includes monetary fines as well as points being taken off of driver's license.

within city borders, Paris has always had a strictly enforced speed restriction. For example, The important Peripherique ring road, has a 70 kmph speed restriction. Speed restrictions that are clearly stated are intended to aid pedestrians as well as reduce the number of accidents and noise pollution.

Several major European towns have implemented regulations ranging from no access into important districts and designated bicycle lanes to charging tolls for motor vehicle admission into specified regions.
