PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron said during an ambassadors' conference that France must stick to an independent foreign policy and build more balanced partnerships for multi-lateralism.

He told the diplomats, that 'in recent years, there were several unpredictable incidents including the Covid pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, and that  France alone does not have the means to resolve these crises. Threfore, its interest is to "build more and more balanced, equal, bilateral and regional partnerships", Macron said.

The President said that he wants to maintain France as a "balanced force" that promotes peace and security while also making it "stronger, more influential, and more autonomous." He informed the French diplomats that the concept of strategic autonomy has gained traction throughout Europe.

"Most importantly, we have worked together to strengthen Europe's defence, brick by brick. Both bilaterally and multilaterally, we have done this. We have made this European Union stronger. "We are in fact cementing and bolstering our independence. At the global level, I share this same desire for independence, he continued, noting that Europe is becoming "more and more autonomous." The United States is an ally, but Macron cautioned, "We do not want to depend on it."

Therefore, this independence, which is partly geopolitical, must be built by France and Europe. It is not necessary to ask us how to direct our policy. In addition, Macron stated that France's foreign policy aspires to maintain and strengthen multilateralism. He suggested that France should step up its multilateral efforts, particularly in the areas of public health, climate change, and biodiversity.

Macron emphasised "the value of international health collaboration" through the World Health Organization in terms of public health. "I believe that consolidating the World Health Organization as the cornerstone of an effective multilateral institution should be our job. We must unquestionably strengthen the values of open communication, accountability, and objectivity in science, he said.
