Bhopal: Due to economic reasons, the Government of Madhya Pradesh has increased the price of petrol and diesel. The Shivraj government has decided to impose a corona tax of one rupee on one litre of oil in the state. After this increase, the price of one-litre petrol has been increased to Rs 82.64 and diesel to Rs 73.14. The new prices have come into effect from 13 June 2020.

Due to the Coronavirus epidemic and lockdown, state governments are struggling with revenue shortage, due to which VAT has been increased in many states earlier. By applying Covid tax on oil, the Shivraj government will get additional revenue of about Rs 570 crore in a year, out of which Rs 200 crore will come from petrol and the rest from diesel. Sources in the petroleum industry say that oil prices may rise further. The price can be increased by one rupee per litre.

In September 2019 too, the Madhya Pradesh government had increased VAT on petrol and diesel by five percent. Due to this, the price of petrol in Bhopal was increased by Rs 2.91 and diesel by Rs 2.86 per liter. In Indore, petrol became expensive at Rs 3.26 and diesel at Rs 3.14 per liter. Now 33 per cent VAT is charged from customers on one litre of petrol in Madhya Pradesh and 23 per cent on diesel, which is the highest among other states in the country.
