Chennai: The payrole period of Nalini Sriharan, convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has been extended. The Madras High Court has extended his payroll by another three weeks. Nalini Sriharan is living in Sathwachari after his release from Vellore Central Jail on July 25. In her petition, Nalini said that despite all her efforts, she could not complete the preparations for her daughter's wedding during this period. Nalini, who has been serving a 27-year jail term, had petitioned for a six-month release for her daughter's marriage.

During the hearing on the petition, the Public Prosecutor submitted before the court that as per rules, parole can be given for a maximum period of 30 days and hence Nalini was given one month's parole. Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a suicide attack during an election rally at Sriperumbudur in Kanchipuram on May 21, 1991. Nalini along with six others are facing life imprisonment in the case. Nalini was released on parole for a month for her daughter's wedding in July.

With the release, the court had stipulated that she would not leave Vellore during the period and would not talk to the media and any leaders. She had filed a parole petition for her daughter's wedding, which was accepted by the Madras Court on July 5. The main mastermind of the assassination of the former PM was the Sri Lankan-based outfit LTTE.
