The Uttar Pradesh government has informed the Supreme Court that madrassa education, which emphasizes religious studies, is not aligned with mainstream education. As a result, students from madrassas can only qualify for jobs that require a class 10 or 12 pass, according to a recent affidavit.

This statement was made in response to appeals from madrassas and their teachers challenging the Allahabad High Court's ruling, which annulled the Madrasa Education Act of 2004, declaring it a violation of fundamental rights and secular principles. The Supreme Court has temporarily stayed the High Court's judgment.

The state explained that while madrassas teach mainstream subjects up to class 8, the curriculum changes for classes 9 and 10. Students must choose only one subject from options such as mathematics, home science (for girls), logic and philosophy, social science, science, or Tib (traditional medical science).

At the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the UP Madrasa Board issues qamil and fazil degrees. However, these degrees have not been recognized as equivalent to mainstream qualifications by the UP or Union government or any university for employment purposes. Therefore, the government stated that madrassa-educated students are eligible only for positions requiring a high school or intermediate qualification.

What Are Madrasas?
A madrasa is an Arabic term for an educational institution. In the early centuries of Islam, mosques functioned as places of learning as well. However, from the 10th century onward, madrasas emerged as unique institutions for both religious and secular education within the Islamic world.

The earliest records of madrasas can be traced back to Khorasan and Transoxania, regions that correspond to present-day eastern and northern Iran, central Asia, and Afghanistan. Larger madrasas often provided accommodations for students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
