Mumbai: The Lawari village under Kurkheda taluka in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra has imposed a ban on the entry of Maoists. The Kurkheda taluka, which belongs to the Gadchiroli district, is considered to be one of the worst Maoist-affected districts. In the same year, a major Maoist attack on security forces took place in Gadchiroli district.

The tribal villagers of Lawari have written to the Gadchiroli police urging them to pardon the six youths who were detained after the attack on the police party on May 1. On May 1, 15 QRT commandos and 1 civilian were killed in an IED attack at Kurkheda taluka in Gadchiroli. More than 30 kilograms of explosives were loaded into the IED. The impact of the blast can be gauged from the fact that the vehicle on which the commandos were riding and the body parts of the commandos were found scattered about 800 metres away.

In addition to the Maoist cadre like Narmada, six youths from Lawari village also joined the Maoists in the attack. The six youths were later arrested and sent to jail. The villagers of Lawari handed over letters to sp. Gadchiroli, Shailesh Balkwade on Friday morning and urged the six youths of the village to be pardoned. The letter said that the youths were instigated by the Maoists saying that they were fighting for their water, land and forest.
