Kolhapur: Sri Mahalakshmi Temple in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra is one of the 52 'Shakti Peeths' of Mata. The temple was built in the seventh century by King Karandev of the Chalukya dynasty. The 'Trinetra' (Third eye) of the mother Sati was dropped here. It is considered to be the special residence of Mahalakshmi.
According to the ' Karvir area identity ' and ' Lakshmi Vijay ', the demon named Kausalsur was able to be killed by the woman, so Lord Vishnu himself appeared in Mahalakshmi form and killed him in the war. Before death, the demon solicited the goddess and said that the area would get her name. The goddess gave the blessing and was located there, and it was called the ' Karvir area ', which became ' Kolhapur ' in the changing times. The mother was called Koasura Mardini. According to the Padma Purana, this area is 108 kalpa ancient and is called Mahamartka, as it is the main place of the Goddess.
The statue of Mata Lakshmi set up in this temple is said to be about 7,000 years old. Many deities, including Bavgrah, Including Lord Sun, Mahishasur Mardini, Vittal Rakmai, Shivji, Vishnu, Tulja Bhawani, etc., are also located in the temple. Some of the idols of these deities are also mentioned in the 11th century.
