Mumbai: A 24-year-old farmer in Latur district of Maharashtra jumped into a barrage after his crop was damaged due to heavy rains. According to police, the incident took place on Friday night in Dongargaon village under Shirur Ananthpal tehsil. The deceased has been identified as Ajit Vikram Ban.

The police official said the farmer had four acres of land, but his entire crop was destroyed due to heavy rains in Marathwada area a few months ago. Because of this, he began to remain stressed. He had taken a loan of Rs 8 lakh from banks, as well as thousands of rupees for manure seeds, but he started living in depression due to crop failure. He was worried about being harmed all the time. According to police, he also wrote letters to district authorities and local leaders to compensate for crop damage, to provide some major financial assistance, but only 7,000 rupees. This made farmer Ajit Vikram Ban upset.

The police officer said he broke down from inside due to crop failure and debt, so he jumped into a barrage and committed suicide. He said a case of accidental death has been registered at the police station. The deceased farmer is survived by his parents, wife and one-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
