The BJP is on its way to becoming the largest party in the Maharashtra Legislative Council after the election to be held for 11 seats on July 16. The Election Commission (ECI) had announced the election dates for 11 seats of the vacant council at the end of July last week. Assembly members will vote for these seats in the elections.

Of the 11 members whose membership ends on 27th July, four are NCP, three Congress , two BJP and one Shivsena and one member of the Indian Farmers Workers Party (PWP). On the basis of number force in the Assembly, the BJP can easily win five seats and Shiv Sena two seats.

At the same time, according to the agreement between the Congress and NCP, the Congress can win two seats and NCP one seat. It is believed that the outgoing legislator of PWP, Parshar Jayant Patil, will save their seat.

NCP sources said, "According to the understanding made with the Congress, they had given us support in two seats (last year) due to which we Nimbalkar could be elected as the leader of the Opposition as the Chairman of the Council and Dhananjay. He said that hence in this election, NCP will give Congress two seats, while Sharad Pawar's party will take only one seat."

He said, 'We have selected the Babadani Durrani as our candidate.' At present, the 78-member legislative council consists of NCP's 20, Congress 18, BJP 20, Shiv Sena 11, JDU is one, PWP-I is one, PRP has one and six Independent MLCs.

According to the election manifesto announced by the Election Commission, the last date for filing of nomination is July 5. Nomination papers will be scrutinized on July 6 and the nomination papers will be withdrawn till July 9. Voting will be done on July 16 and the same day counting of votes and results will be announced in the evening.

BJP spokesman Madhav Bhandari said, "According to our strength and current law, the power equation will change after July 16th." A BJP source said on condition of anonymity that once the party becomes the largest party in the Upper House, then the party will make efforts for the post of the post.
