RAIGAD: In response to a heavy rainfall warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several districts in Maharashtra will see a school holiday on Monday. This decision affects Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli in the Vidarbha region, along with four tehsils in Raigad district on the coast.

The IMD has alerted these areas about the possibility of very heavy rains and advised residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Over the weekend, Nagpur and its surrounding areas experienced intense rainfall, causing significant flooding in low-lying areas. Authorities have been moving residents to safer locations. Raigad district, near Mumbai, also saw heavy rainfall, leading to similar concerns.

Raigad district collector Kishan Jawale has announced a holiday for both government and private schools in Mangaon, Karjat, Poladpur, and Mahad tehsils for Monday. However, teachers and non-teaching staff are required to report to schools to support relief and rescue operations.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has urged officials to stay highly alert. He stressed the importance of coordinating with the State Disaster Response Force, local administration, civic bodies, and police, keeping in touch with the IMD for updated weather information. Shinde also called for the implementation of flood control measures, necessary traffic diversions, and the stocking of essential supplies, including food, medicine, and relief materials. Establishing temporary shelters for people and animals affected by the rains is also a priority.

As Maharashtra, including Mumbai and the Konkan region, continues to face heavy rainfall, these precautions are crucial to ensure public safety and effective disaster response.
