Mumbai: The Uddhav Thackeray-led government of Maharashtra has decided to give five percent reservation in education and employment to Muslims in the state. State Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik has said on Friday that the Mahavikas Aghadi government of the state has proposed to give five percent reservation to Muslims in educational institutions.

Nawab Malik informed the State Legislative Council that the Uddhav government will ensure that a law is passed soon in this regard. He assured the House that 'appropriate steps' would be taken in this regard before the commencement of admission in schools. Malik has given information in this regard in response to the question of Congress MLA Sharad Rampis. At the same time, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has opposed this decision. BJP leader and former CM Devendra Fadnavis have said that we will oppose this decision of the government.

Nawab Malik said that 'The High Court had approved a five percent reservation for the Muslim community in government educational institutions. No action was taken in this regard during the tenure of the previous government. Therefore, we have announced the implementation of the High Court order as law.
