The National Population Register (NPR) will come into force from May 1 in the Indian state of Maharashtra. This decision has been taken at a time when protests are going on all over the country regarding the NPR, the Citizens Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The state government's decision to implement the NPR is getting tense among allies.

According to media reports, despite the nationwide protests against CAA, NPR and NRC, the Union Home Ministry has issued a notification to collect information under NPR from May 1 to June 15. At the same time, the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner (RGCC) of Maharashtra held a meeting with state officials on NPR and Census on February 6 and about 3.34 lakh employees have been deployed to implement both the procedures. The state government will soon issue a notification regarding this.

The Shiv Sena, Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Mahavikas Aghadi in the state are getting increasingly worried about this matter. The Congress is continuously opposing the CAA, NRC and NPR. It is believed that the Congress will oppose the implementation of NPR in Maharashtra as well. At the same time, NCP has not clarified its stand on this. Recently, NCP leader and minister Anil Deshmukh said during a meeting with representatives of opponents of NPR that the government is consulting law experts.
