Congress leader Nana Patole is elected as the Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Sunday as BJP nominee Kishan Kathore has withdrawn his nomination. The deadline for the withdrawal of nominations was till 10 in the morning on Sunday. The Congress on Saturday announced the name of party MLA Patole as the Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP alliance candidate for the post of state assembly speaker, while the BJP nominated Kathore as its candidate. Patole represents the Sakoli assembly seat in Vidarbha while Kathore is an MLA from Murbad in Thane.

In his statement, NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal said about the election of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, 'Earlier the Opposition had filled the form for the post of the Speaker of the Assembly but to retain the dignity of the Assembly and the request of other MLAs, they withdraw their candidate's name. Now the election of the Speaker of the Assembly will be uncontested. Nana Patole of Congress has been elected to the post of Assembly Speaker of Maha Vikas Aghadi.
