London : The 56-year-old great-granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi has been sentenced to seven years in prison by a court in Durban, South Africa. He is accused of cheating and forgery, the court on Monday convicted Ashish Lata Ramgobin. Ashish Lata Ramgobin was found guilty by the court in a fraud case of 6 million South African rands (32.22 lakh 84 thousand 460 Indian rupees).

SR Maharaj had given Lata Ramgobin as an advance of 6.2 million for allegedly clearing imports and customs duties for non-existent consignment from India. When the trial of the case against Lata Ramgobin began in 2015, Brigadier Hangwani Mulodji of the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) said he had allegedly provided fake invoices and papers to potential investors to convince them that three linen containers were being sent from India. Lata Ramgobin was released on 50,000 rand bail at the time.

During the hearing on Monday, the court was told that Lata Ramgobin had met Maharaj, director of the New Africa Alliance Footwear Distributors, in August 2015. The company imports, manufactures and sells clothes, linen and shoes. Maharaj's company also provides finance to other companies on profit-share basis. Lata Ramgobin had told Maharaj that she had imported three containers of linen for South African hospital group Netcare.
