Harare: Mahendra Singh Dhoni qualled Ricky Ponting's record of captaining in 324 international matches. With that Dhoni, equalled Ponting's tally at the top of the list.

Dhoni, who was appointed captain in 2007, has led India in 60 Tests, 194 ODIs and 70 T20 Internationals. The 34-year-old happens to be India's most successful captain ever, having overseen 27 Test match victories, 107 ODI wins and 40 T20 victories.

Dhoni, in his nine-year tenure, has helped India lift the World T20 (2007), the World Cup (2011) and the Champions Trophy (2013) besides ensuring that his team rose to the top of the ICC Test rankings, thanks to some sensational performances at home.

However, the Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batsman failed as a leader overseas, losing successive Test series in England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

His recent records in limited-overs cricket are not enviable either - since the World Cup last year, Dhoni has overseen series defeats against Bangladesh, South Africa and Australia.

India also failed to reach the final of the World T20, which was held for the first time at home since its inception.

Calls have grown louder to replace Dhoni with Virat Kohli as captain of India's limited-overs teams. The Jharkhand veteran had retired from Test cricket in 2014 in the middle of a high-profile series in Australia.
